My Honest Review of Misfits Market

My Honest Review of Misfits Market

jjenson.family3

After months of hearing good things about Misfits Market from some of my favorite moms on Youtube, I was thrilled to see that the company now serves South Dakota.

If you haven’t heard of Misfits Market, it is a company that delivers fresh, organic produce as well as dairy products, meats, seafood, and pantry staples to your door. The fruits and vegetables they source are those that might otherwise be wasted because they are surplus, or are too small, large, or odd looking to be sold in traditional grocery stores.I hate food waste and love fruits and vegetables, so I was excited to give their produce boxes a try. Here is my honest, non-sponsored review.

My Experience

The sign up process was easy, and I was able to customize my produce box with foods my family would enjoy. No surprises! I had access to varieties of produce that I can’t find in my rural area, like purple sweet potatoes and Romanesco broccoli. The deliveries are very flexible. You can select the delivery day that works best for you. You can also choose how often you receive a box and easily skip weeks. Cancellation is easy, should you decide you don’t want regular deliveries.

My delivery came exactly when it was supposed to, and in eco-friendly packaging. At first glance, most everything looked fresh and of good quality. Unfortunately, the first glance was a bit deceiving. I noticed that the purple sweet potatoes were moldy. The butternut squash was much smaller than what I would normally pick out in a store. When I sliced open the avocados the next day, they were all brown on the inside. The quality is a gamble, similar to the gamble I take when ordering produce in a Walmart pick-up order. Everything else was very good, especially the citrus. The kids devoured the mandarin oranges in a day. We were able to make some tasty veggie based meals.

Quality considered, I didn’t feel the fresh produce I received was worth the cost. In order to order a box, you must spend a minimum of $30, not including shipping. And shipping was expensive. I’ve read that shipping for Misfits is typically a $5.50 flat rate. In my rural area, the shipping was $7.99. I spent $30.26 total for my box, after using a discount code for 30% off that knocked $9.54 off my total cost.

I did a cost breakdown, comparing the prices of Misfits Market to the prices at our local Walmart. I included Walmart’s prices for both organic and conventionally grown produce.

Misfits MarketWalmart – OrganicWalmart- Conventional
Avocados, 5-6 count$4.99$4.79 for 3-5$3.96 for 4-6
Mandarin Oranges, 2 lbs.$5.19$5.98$4.78 for 3 lbs.

Misfits Total without discount, shipping included: $39.80

Walmart Organic Total: $24.43 (But keep in mind, three of the organic products were unavailable in my my area for a cost comparison)

Walmart Conventional Total: $28.27

Misfits Market Pros:

  • Flexible scheduling
  • Easy customization
  • Good variety of produce and other groceries
  • Prevents food waste
  • Quick delivery
  • Saves money (if you are committed to buying organic produce

Misfits Market Cons:

  • Quality was mixed; some produce was moldy and spoiled
  • Expensive (if you are not committed to buying organic products)
  • Not all of the produce is grown in the US, if locally grown produce is important to you

Final Verdict:

I enjoyed my experience with Misfits Market for the most part. However, I didn’t feel it was worth the price, especially with the added cost of shipping. I can’t recommend it as a way to save money unless you are very committed to buying organic produce. As a growing family on one income, we consider organic produce to be a luxury, not a necessity. We typically buy conventionally grown produce and save our money that way. Not to mention that some of the vegetables arrived spoiled and wound up in the trash, wasting more money. While customers are able to contact the company for a replacement box if they receive spoiled produce, I didn’t bother to.
